The Employee Verification Act
- The act's primary purpose was to amend the Social Security Act and the Immigration and Nationality Act to require employers to verify the legality of their new hires. This would have been accomplished by creating the Electronic Employment Verification System and the Secure Employment Eligibility Verification System.
- The Commissioner of Social Security would have been in charge of implementing the act. Additionally, the Employment Verification Advisory Council would have been created to assist the commissioner in his duties.
- The act was proposed by Rep. Samuel Johnson (Republican, Texas) on Feb. 28, 2008. After being referred to the House Subcommittee on Ways and Means, the act was never voted on and thus never became law.
