    • 1). Open the main Ubuntu menu, move your cursor over "Accessories," then click on "Terminal." In most cases, using a Linux terminal to issue commands is faster and more powerful than using GUIs (graphical user interfaces).

    • 2). Type or copy and paste "sudo apt-get install avidemux" at the terminal prompt, then hit "Enter." Enter your administrator password when prompted, then hit "Enter" again. This will download and install Avidemux and any required dependencies.

    • 3). Type "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras libdvdread3" after the Avidemux installation is complete, then hit "Enter." This will download and install the restricted codecs required to play and edit DVD formats in Ubuntu.

    • 4). Type "sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh," then hit "Enter." This will complete the installation of the "libdvdread3" codec package. Open the main menu, move your cursor over "Sound and Video," then click on "Avidemux."

      The Avidemux "Auto Wizard" window

Click "Open" in the Avidemux toolbar, then browse to the AVI file you want to convert. Click on "Auto," then choose either SVCD or DVD depending on your desired file size and video quality. Click "OK" in the Auto Wizard window to have Avidemux choose the proper encoding settings for you.

    • 6). Click "Save," then name the file and browse to the location where you would like for it to be saved. Click "OK" to start the encoding process. Once the MPEG-2 file is encoded, it can be used in your favorite DVD authoring program to make an SVCD or DVD disk.
