How to Fix a Blown Out Sky in Photoshop
- 1). Open the photograph with a blown-out sky in Photoshop by selecting "File" and "Open." Find the image file in the explorer window, click on it, and then press "Open."
- 2). Select the "Image" menu and choose the "Calculations" option. Set the Channel as "Red," the Blending as "Normal," and the Result to "New Document." This will sample all the red pixels from your image and create a new file.
- 3). Return to the "Image" menu and choose "Adjust" and "Selective Color." Select "Neutrals" as the colorand manipulate the color sliders until you have created a blue sky. You will likely need to increase the Cyan slider to approximately 25 percent, the Magenta slider to approximately 5 percent and the Yellow slider to approximately -30 percent. Leave the Black slider at 0 percent. Press "OK."
- 4). Select the entire image by choosing "All" from the "Select" menu. Copy the selection by opening the "Edit" menu and clicking "Copy." Return to your original image by clicking its window in Photoshop and paste the selection by choosing "Paste" from the "Edit" menu.
- 5). Click on the "Blending Mode" menu in the layers pane and choose "Multiply." This will blend your bluer image with your original photograph.
- 6). Remove the blue ground--leaving only the edits you have made to the sky--by selecting the "Eraser" tool and dragging your mouse over the land. This will remove the edited layer, and let the original unedited ground show through. You do not have to be exact with your erasure; set the Hardness value to approximately 20 percent to leave a soft, gradual border at the horizon.
- 7). Open the "Image" menu and choose "Adjustments" and then "Levels." Slide the arrow on the left side of the graph inward until it lines up with the start of the graph. Move the center arrow to the right to darken the image overall and bring out more color from the sky. Click "OK."
