How to Choose a California King Bed

    • 1). Measure the size of your bedroom before you start looking. Even if you think you have the space for a California king, you might be surprised to learn that you're missing a few crucial inches. This bed measures at least 72 inches wide and 84 inches long---narrower and longer than a regular king bed---and you'll also want to take into account bedside tables, lamps or anything else you use on the sides of the bed.

    • 2). Decide on the type of bed that you like. California king applies only to the size and not the style of the bed. You may prefer a sleigh bed, with a large headboard and footboard, or opt for a bed that's more traditional or one that has nothing at the foot or head. You may even prefer a platform bed, which is slightly elevated off the floor.

    • 3). Look for California king beds at specialty furniture and bed stores including Ashley Home Furniture, Ikea and even Value City Furniture. This gives you the chance to try each bed out, get a look at the design and see what features each type of bed has.

    • 4). Set your budget for a bed, but only after visiting a few stores in your area. When setting a budget, you should keep in mind that quality is more important than price. A poor or inferior bed might cost less, but it will most likely degrade over time, and you'll find yourself shopping again in the next few years.

    • 5). Buy a California king that features storage underneath the bed, either as drawers or small cabinets. Since these beds are so large, it gives you extra room to store clothing, sporting equipment and anything else cluttering up your room. You can even find platform style beds with storage, which gives you even more space underneath.
