    • 1). Take note of what the auditor or collection agency tells you about your bounced check. You will be contacted either by phone or in writing and given the check number, the date the check was written, the amount of the check and the merchant the check was written to.

    • 2). Pay the amount of the check plus additional fees, including the merchant's bounced check fee and your bank's insufficient fund fees, immediately. Most companies allow you 30 days to correct the mistake. Bank and merchant fees for bouncing a check range from $15 to $35 as of 2010.

    • 3). Make a payment arrangement you can stick to if you can't pay the amount in full.

    • 4). Follow up with the collection agency after paying in full. Verify payment was received and request a receipt showing the debt has been discharged. Your check writing privileges may be restored with the merchant after you've satisfied the debt.
