The Basics of Furnishing a Loft

    • 1). Make peace with the fact that may windows cover 80% of your walls. Determine if your natural sleep habits are at all affected by the light coming through the windows. Isolate which windows are the most problematic. Then, if necessary, buy thick drapes or make your own to cover the entire window. Hang the drapes by drilling into the brick or cement to fix a horizontal pole to the wall and then folding material over it to hang down. Choose a color to either blend with the rest of your apartment motif or select a bold, accent color like red or orange.

    • 2). Put your bed up against the wall. Attach a headboard with cabinets to create instant storage and avoid clutter. Use the space under your bed for seasonal clothing storage containers. Keep the containers consistent in shape and size in order to keep a clean, neat look.

    • 3). Separate your living, kitchen and bedroom areas. One way to do this is to paint the different areas different colors.

    • 4). Choose only essential pieces of furniture if you are working with an extremely limited space. Since storage space is often non-existent in lofts, buy furniture that can do double-duty. For example, a futon serves as a sofa by day and easily transforms into a bed at night, or a low wooden chest can be both a coffee table and a place for storing towels and linens.

    • 5). Choose art that can be hung from the ceiling if windows occupy most of your wall space, or use decorative accents such as large vases or sculptures that can be set atop of furniture such as dressers or bookcases.
