      Click once on the Windows "Start" button and select "Control Panel."

      Click "Hardware and Sound" on the Control Panel window.

      Click once on the "Adjust system volume" link under the "Sound" section of the "Control Panel/Hardware and Sound" window. The "Master Volume" window that pops up will allow you to raise and lower, as well as mute, the sound for the speakers and currently running applications. Raise or lower the volume by clicking once on the "slider" and dragging it up (to increase) or down (to decrease) while holding down the mouse button. Mute the sound by clicking once on the small speaker icon at the bottom of each section. Close the window by clicking once on the red "X" in the upper, right corner.

      Click "Change system sounds" under the Sound section of the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound window. This option allows you to change the sounds for various alerts, programs and events in Windows. Click once on any option in the Program section, and select a sound from the "Sounds" drop-down menu. When a sound has been assigned to the icon in the "Program" section, the speaker icon beside it will turn gold. Click once on the "Apply" and then once on the "OK" button to save any changes you make.
