Twitter, Facebook and MySpace have collectively changed how people use the Internet and how helpful have been for businesses find potential customers.
Businesses need to be careful in their use of social media sites.
Each site has its own rules on commercial postings, etc.
Also, the users of the site tend to shun overly aggressive commercial postings.
1) Twitter - Give them Information People love information.
Though you are limited in what you can say in 140 characters, your ability to master doing so will help you get more followers and have more impact on Twitter.
The information you provide should not be just about your business and/or products.
You need to go beyond that.
Though you should include tweets specifically about your business and products or services, they should not be the only topics of your tweets.
Some marketing experts say you should only have roughly 20% of your tweets specifically about your company and/or products and services.
The other 80% of your tweets should include information that would interest your target market.
In addition to the information you can also entertain your followers.
2) Twitter - Entertain Your Followers Your Twitter followers should fit a certain profile.
Basically, they should be your target market for your business.
Knowing their profile will help you provide information they find interesting as well as help you entertain them.
Twitter followers appreciate entertainment and they love to be entertained.
You can do this with humor, with links to relevant videos or stories, etc.
For those of us who are not comedians, you can find humorous quotes and videos and tweet them.
The more entertaining your followers find you the more they will focus on your tweets.
They will also recommend you to people they know that will also enjoy your tweets.
3) Twitter - Product Information and Promotions The 20% of your tweets that will include product information and promotions must be done properly.
 You want maximum impact here.
With only 140 characters it may be hard to give a good product description.
You may need to only highlight one feature per tweet.
When you announce a promotion, try to have promotions specifically for your Twitter followers - reward them for their loyalty.
The link to the discount page can be one you provide only on Twitter.
You can also run incentives where you help grow your fan base by having your current Twitter followers recommend you to other people.
This type of promotion is highly effective.
For example, you offer a discount or special price for one or more products when you reach 500 followers; 1000 followers, etc.
Tweet about the next promotion at least once per day to keep your followers engaged in growing your fan base.
As you grow your fan base you will find that your promotions have greater impact.
You will also start to learn more about your client base.
Follow some of your clients and see what they tweet about.
This will give you insight into what they find important, interesting, funny, etc.
