How to Fill Holes in a Cinder Block Wall

    • 1). Fill any small holes in the wall by applying concrete repair compound. Clean the surface of the wall thoroughly and let it dry. Load a tube into a caulking gun, cut off the nozzle tip with a knife to create a nozzle of the desired width and fill the hole. If the hole is too large to fill this way, it probably requires replacing part or all of the cinder block, so skip to Step 2.

    • 2). Chisel the mortar out from around the block you need to remove, using a hammer and a cold chisel. Pull out the cinder block once the block is loose enough. If you cannot remove enough mortar to pull out the block, demolish the front part of the block with the hammer and chisel to gain access to the remaining mortar in the back of the wall space. Chisel out the rest of the mortar and remove the remaining pieces of block.

    • 3). Mix a batch of mortar in a bucket, following the manufacturer's directions. Lay an even bed of mortar on the bottom of the space in the wall with a trowel, matching the depth of the existing mortar joints.

    • 4). Place two beads of mortar on the raised ends on the left and right sides of the cinder block with the trowel, once again matching the depth of the existing mortar in the wall. Put down another two beads of mortar along the top channels of the block, as well as along the cross-bar(s) running across the middle of the block.

    • 5). Place the cinder block in the hollow space in the wall, taking care to maintain an even wall face. Do not push the block in too far if the space behind the wall is empty.

    • 6). Scrape away any excess mortar that was pushed out of the wall by drawing the trowel straight down across the face of the wall.
