The Best Fescue for Yards
- Several types of fescue could grow well in the yard. Being cool-season turfgrasses, they generally withstand cold well. They have various colors and maintenance levels. Different fescues grow best in different environments and tolerate different conditions. Choose one that suits your purposes, your yard and climate conditions and your commitment level.
- A popular turfgrass, tall fescue grows well in sunny or partially shady soil. It forms a dense, uniform lawn with good weed and disease resistance. It also tolerates warm conditions, drought and moderate traffic. It remains green during cool conditions. Some varieties that have been designed for the lawn have finer texture and shorter stature. It requires only infrequent mowing and does not do well in high altitudes.
- Blue fescue develops distinctive blue-green foliage and works well as a ground cover or accent plant. Small flowers form in early summer, but you should remove them to retain the moundlike appearance of this fescue. It displays a more intense color in full sun but can tolerate partial shade.
- Hard fescue grows well in soils with low fertility levels and in shaded areas. It requires no mowing and works well as groundcover on slopes, median strips and unused areas of the yard. It tolerates drought and cold well but could not withstand severe injury and high temperatures.
