There is no doubt that the internet has taken over the world in a big way, so much so that there isn't anyone in the world who doesn't know how to go online or at least have an idea of what the internet is and what it can do.
Even your favorite grandma or grandpa who you didn't figure to be tech-savvy actually posts more messages than you do on social media sites.
This just goes to show that the internet has ceased to become just a hobby but is in fact a lifestyle and a necessity.
Most people cannot go without the internet for 15 minutes, let alone a whole day of not being able to go online and check the messages.
Even paying bills is encouraged online because you can actually manage several accounts at one time instead of having to wait for your bills to be delivered in the mail, which have a tendency to get lost.
As far as what percentage of the population use the internet the most, a surprising fact is that the baby boomers, people over 50 comprise a substantial cut of the pie at almost 60%.
This is due to the fact that seniors have caught up with the way things are getting done and have learned to adopt and appreciate the ease and convenience of the internet as far as helping them manage their lives independently are concerned.
When you can buy your medications online, check your calorie intake and get ideas on how to spend your retirement money wisely, it is no surprise why senior citizens, like the rest of the younger generation have decided to go automated and digital.
However, there aren't many broadband plan discounts available for seniors but there are tons of ways that they can save on their broadband usage, regardless of how often they are online.
It also helps that the Federal Trade Commission has set up a website providing tips, articles, videos and interactive activities that teach consumers, particularly seniors on how to protect themselves from online scams and other risks of using the internet.
They specifically emphasize points on how to recognize scams, how to shop safely online, how to avoid hackers and viruses and how to deal with spam, phishing, spyware and file sharing.
Some companies offer senior discounts when you get a home phone bundle from them which means getting a discount on your phone calls and connection charges.
To qualify for these discounts, you simply give your reference number for Centrelink or the Department of Veterans' Affairs to your broadband supplier of choice along with your name, date of birth and postcode and this will get the discount automatically applied to your account.
If you think you qualify for these discounts, call Centrelink to find out if you are eligible.
And lastly, just because it says "senior" on some plans that you might be interested in, don't fall for the hype and make sure you check it thoroughly.
You will still need to decide based on your usage and needs.
Never make decisions based on price because while you may think cheaper ISPs are the way to go, they tend to cut back on the extras so you still don't get your money's worth.
