How to Get a Swimming Pool Cover to Stay On

    • 1). Find a swimming pool cover made for the size and shape of your pool. The material should be vinyl, polypropylene or UV-stabilized polyethylene. These types of covers are more likely to stay on your pool.

    • 2). Add tracks along the side of your swimming pool for the pool cover to fit into. Ask a pool supply store or a contractor to add the tracks. Because the cover fits into the tracks, it's more likely to stay on.

    • 3). Place a leaf net over your regular pool cover, especially when closing your pool for the winter. Remove the leaf net periodically to remove leaves, debris and other organic matter from your swimming pool cover. The less heavy debris on the cover, the easier it is to keep the cover on the pool.

    • 4). Regulate the standing water. Vacuum off most of the standing water on top of your pool cover using a pool vacuum cleaner. Excess water can cause your pool cover to slip from the sides and into the water. Keep only a small amount of water in the center of the pool cover to keep it from blowing away.

    • 5). Weigh down the edges of your pool cover. Tie one end of a string to a heavy object, such as a brick, and the other end to the metal loops on the edge of the pool cover. Ensure that the string is long enough for the brick to rest on the ground with the string pulled tight. Place the weighted objects all around the pool. This will help keep your pool cover on even during rough winter storms.
