- Brink's Safe began as a small start-up in Chicago in 1859. Perry Brink lent his name to the new company, which grew in the following decades as a cartage company, making general deliveries in horse-drawn carts. Brink's made its first bank delivery in 1891, taking six bags of silver dollars to Home National Bank, Brink's Safe became a division of the Pittston Company in 1956. Brinks added a Home Security division in 1983. The Pittston Company changed its name to The Brink's Company in 2003 to reflect the importance of the Brink's Safe division.
- Brink's Safe offers several different types of security products. Among the most well-known is the company's line of safes, which come in a wide range of sizes and styles. Home safes include both manual and electronic models, while Brink's Safe can also create custom security solutions for banks, governments and other high-profile clients. Besides safes, Brink's supplies a line of armored trucks as well as security planes for transporting currency and other valuables.
- Brink's armored trucks have been the subject of two major robbery attempts. In 1982, two police officers and a Brink's security guard were killed when members of the Weather Underground organization attacked a Brink's truck. The attackers did not manage to steal any of the truck's contents. Another robbery attempt occurred in 1993 when a group of attackers stole more than $7 million from a Brink's truck dispatching center.
- The Brink's Company is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol BCO. As of April 2010, Brink's stock stood just below $30 per share. BCO was selling around $70 per share in early 2008, but fell drastically during the 2009-2009 recession.
The Brink's Company has its headquarters in Richmond, Virginia, and employs more than 50,000 people in more than 50 countries around the world. - In 2008, The Brink's Company spun off its Brink's Home Security division, which became known as Broadview Security. According to the company's website, Broadview supplies security systems to more than 1.3 million homes in the United States and Canada.
