Finding flowers that flourish in the sun may not be a challenge, but finding flowers that can survive the heat as well may seem like more of a challenge. There are a wide range of perennial flowers you can use to color up your landscape that will grow well even in the hot sun. - Daylilies add color to your garden.Beautiful vibrant daylily variety "Misty Moonlight". image by Sharon Day from Fotolia.com
These plants come in every color of the rainbow except for blue. Most varieties of daylilies bloom in the early summer, but industry experts have been hybridizing (or crossing different flowers) to develop blooms that will continue throughout the summer season.
Daylilies are named for the fact that each bloom stays open for only one day. Each stem of the plant will produce numerous buds which makes the daylily a delight in the garden and as a cut flower as well. Full sun will not be a problem for the daylilies. Many can also handle high heat and dry soil. - Sedums light up a late summer garden.Sedum image by Kimberly Wickerink from Fotolia.com
Sedums are hardy alpine plants that thrive in most soils and grow extremely well in full sun. The sedums tolerate heat with very little struggle.
Autumn Joy--Sedum telephium--produces brilliant red/pink flowers in the late summer to early fall that the hummingbirds and butterflies will enjoy. An individual plant can grow up to two feet wide, and the flowers will reach heights of about two feet when the plant is mature.
Frost Morn produces white flowers on leaves that are dark green and edged in white. The late summer blooms are a delight in any garden. The flowers that are produced will be whiter based on the warmth of the climate where the plant grows. - Shasta daisies can thrive in the garden or home.Daisy image by StylezInk from Fotolia.com
Shasta daisy (Chrysanthemum x superbum) grows to a height of two to three feet and produces white flowers with a green/yellow center. These flowers are excellent for cut arrangements but are also highly attractive to butterflies. They can tolerate some drought and thrive in full sun.
Cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus) is a fast-growing annual flower that reseeds readily, making it a nice addition to a cottage garden or other informal garden design. It thrives in full sun and produces daisylike flowers that come in shades of pink, red, purple and white.
