Foxtail Palm

• The foxtail palm (Wodyetia bifurcata) is one of the two parents of the hybrid foxy lady. The foxtail palm is distinguished by and named for its foliage; the bushy leaves look like fox tails. The trunk has a unique bottle shape and grows as tall as 30 feet at full maturity. Foxtail palm is a native of Australia, where it is a threatened species because so few of the palms still exist in the wild. In the United States, foxtail palms may be grown in U.S. Department of Agriculture Hardiness zones 10 and 11. The plant is mildly frost-hardy, withstanding temperatures as low as 27 degrees Fahrenheit for a brief period.
  
  

Arecina Palm

• The arecina palm (Veitchia arecina) is the second tree used to make the hybrid foxy lady. The arecina palm may be grown in U.S. Department of Agriculture Hardiness zones 10 and 11. The canopy contains only eight to 10 leaves. Arecina palm is very disease-hardy and grown best in moist, warm soil. The arecina is a tall palm, growing up to 40 feet high.
  
  

Cultivation

• Foxy lady palm trees (Wodyetia X Veitchia bifurcatum x arecina) may be grown in U.S. Department of Agriculture Hardiness zones 9 to 11. Provide the tree with sun and moist soil and it will thrive. The foxy lady palm grows best in neutral soil, with a pH rating falling between 6.6 and 7.5. Palm trees are intolerant of frost and cold. Foxy lady made be grown in partial shade, but sites with full sunlight are best for these small trees. Under optimal growing conditions, the foxy lady will grow to its full height potential.
  
  

Characteristics

• Foxy lady palms have a wide, spreading leaf canopy that stretches 20 to 30 feet. The large leaves grow around a central, slender stem that's covered in grayish bark. The variegated yellow and green leaves are the most unique and prized feature of the foxy lady palm. At full maturity, the tree will grow 15 to 20 feet high. The foxy lady palm is evergreen and displays no color change in the fall.
