How to Measure Contrast Ratio

    Full On/Full Off Method

    • 1). Turn the screen on and adjust the menu so that the display is all white in a pitch-black room. The process for this will vary by manufacturer, but will require you to adjust the "Contrast" on the menu to change the color. When it gets all white, take a reading with a light meter.

    • 2). Adjust the color so that it is all black. Don't just turn the set off. You want to find out what an all-black image looks like on the TV. Take another reading with the light meter.

    • 3). Set up a ratio with the answer from step 1 on the left, and the answer from step 2 on the right, and a colon in between. This is your contrast ratio.

    ANSI Contrast Ratio Measurement

    • 1). Display a checker-board pattern of 16 alternating white and black rectangles. This is known as the "checkerboard" test pattern.

    • 2). Divide the average output from the white rectangles by the black rectangles.

    • 3). Record the answer to step 2. You now have the ANSI contrast ratio.
