The Leica M6 was a film-based auto-focus camera manufactured by the Leica company starting in the year 1984. The M6 combined the Leica M3 body with modern additions such as LED viewfinder arrows and an off-shutter light meter. The Leica M6 was manufactured from 1984 until 1998. In 1998, the Leica M6 was replaced by the Leica M6 TTL. This was later followed by the Leica M7, Leica M8 and the Leica M9. - The Leica M6 viewfinder is Standard 0.72x featuring a 28mm & 90mm, 35mm & 135mm and 50mm & 75mm combination frames.
- The shutter is made of rubberized cloth and features a horizontal focus plane. The shutter performs full stop clicks including a click for the 1/50 flash sync. Shutter light impulse is 1/1000 of a second when using a flash.
- The Leica M6 motor drive type depends upon when the camera was made. The earlier serial numbers feature Leica Winder M, Leica Winder M4-P and Leica Winder M4-2 (following Leica serial number 10350). The Leica Motor M is an optional addition to the motor drive.
- The remote release on the Leica M6 uses any standard cable release.
- The light meter on the Leica M6 reads off a 12mm central white spot on the shutter curtain.
- The rangefinder base length from the standard 0.72x is 49.9 meters.
- The top and bottom plates on the Leica M6 are both 0.8mm die-cast zinc, with a brass latch on the bottom plate.
- The Leica M6 batteries are A76 or S76 button cell batteries, or one lithium 3-volt CR 1/3N battery (dependent upon year of manufacture; later models have lithium batteries).
- The Leica M6 does not include an automatic flash, but may be used with any SCA 3000 flash and SCA 3501 adapter. Newer flashes such as SF20, SF 24, SF24D or SF-58 will also work with the Leica M6.
- The M6 is 138mm in height, 77mm in width and 38mm in depth. Camera weight is 560g.
