How to Build an Outdoor Barbecue Grill
- 1). Level the ground where you want the barbecue to go, adjusting the surface with the shovel until it is level.
- 2). Lay a base of concrete blocks, packed tightly together. Check that the concrete block base is level.
- 3). Place the metal grill on the base, then lay a row of concrete blocks around the edge of three sides of the metal grill. This will give you the size of the barbecue walls.
- 4). Lay the concrete blocks on top of the initial layer, filling the bottom ones with sand, if desired, for extra weight and strength. Lay the blocks until the walls are 3 feet high.
- 5). Mix the surface bonding cement in the bucket or wheelbarrow according to the mixing directions.
- 6). Cover the surface of the concrete blocks with the bonding cement, using the trowel. Apply small sections at a time, making it around ½ inch thick all over. Wipe the cement in back-and-forth motions, then smooth over with the face of the trowel. Start from the top of the barbecue walls, and continue down, even covering the base. Allow the bonding cement to dry--if possible, let it dry for up to three days.
- 7). Line the inside of the dry barbecue with fire bricks. Place these side by side, then on top of one another, against the barbecue walls. Leave around 8 inches at the top, so that you can place the metal grill on top of the fire bricks. You do not need mortar with the fire bricks, as they expand with heat.
- 8). Slide the metal grill into position, resting on top of the inner wall made by the fire bricks. It should be a snug fit. The fire or barbecue coals are placed in the fire brick area. Lower the grill by taking out a row of fire bricks from the wall, or raise the grill by adding another row of fire bricks to the wall.
