Plastic or wooden slats provide a simple solution to hiding what's on the other side of the fence from the view of others. These plastic slats are woven into the mesh of chain link fences in and over-under pattern and either lock at the top or bottom of the fence line, depending on the needs and preference of the individual. The slats can be woven either vertically or horizontally; both provide the same amount of coverage but showcase a different pattern that simply is a matter of taste for the home and property owner. Plastic slats can be purchased online or at many hardware or home improvement stores.

Another permanent solution to the problem is to dig small trenches on the inside perimeter of the fence and plant small shrubs or hedging that, when fully grown, will obscure seeing through the fence. Measure the height of the fence and take your measurement to your local nursery, hardware store or home improvement center and find shrubs or hedge bushes that will either grow to your needed height or already have matured to their full height. Wisteria and trumpet vines are two well-known, fast-growing perennial vines that can easily cover an area up to 30 feet and can beautify an otherwise drab metal fence. Do not, however, choose wild or domesticated grape vines, as these plants often cause metal to prematurely corrode due to their acidity. Their weight can also cause some fencing to warp over time.

Rolled bamboo coverings are another stylish option for those looking for a durable fence covering. Large sheets of treated bamboo are molded together into pliable fencing that is rolled over an existing fence and staked into the ground using galvanized steel piping. This type of fencing is sold in panels that measure 3 foot-by-8 foot all the way up to 8 foot-by-8 foot with sizes in between. Prices vary according to the supplier.

If you need a temporary solution to the problem, consider buying reusable vinyl outdoor sheets that can be draped over the fencing in an attractive manner and removed when desired. If the occasion is a party or ceremony that you'd like the neighbors or a passerby to not see, the vinyl sheets are a quick fix and are weatherproof. Again, measure the length and height of the fencing and purchase the sheets at a hardware or home improvement store by the yard.
