How to Fix Bent Pins on a Canon Digital Rebel Camera

    • 1). Use a pen light and study the degree to which the pins are bent and how many are out of place. The severity of the bend in these pins should dictate whether you send the camera to a repair technician or attempt to fix it yourself. A local photo store can direct you to the proper repair person. If you are a professional photographer, Canon offers a special service for repairs with discounts and expedited services.

    • 2). Turn the camera off before adjusting the pins. Take a small, thin blade from a pocket knife or similar object and insert it in between the bent pins. Be careful when placing the knife into the camera and do not bend any additional pins. If you have access to a pair of tweezers with long and thin tongs, use these instead of the knife blade for more control in the bending process.

    • 3). Gently, and with minimal pressure on the knife, push the pins apart until they are once again straight. This step is crucial; if too much pressure is applied, the pins will break and you will be facing a very costly repair which may exceed the value of the camera.

    • 4). Insert a compact flash card, free of debris, into the camera to test the pins. If there is debris in the holes at the edge of the card, where the camera pins enter the card to transfer the data from the camera, the pins will bend. If you gently insert the card and it will not slide properly into the camera, do not force the card or the pins will break. Examine the pins again and gently move them and re-insert the card until all the pins fit precisely into the card. Turn on the camera and test the card by taking several images. If the pins are not working properly, the image will not transfer to the card and will show a "card error" message on the camera's LCD screen.
