Honda Stereo Removal
- The stereo in a Honda vehicle is directly connected to the vehicle's battery. Removing the stereo means disconnecting the power supply cable from the unit itself. Before removing the stereo, or any component connected to the Honda electrically, you must first disconnect the grounding cable from the vehicle's battery.
The grounding cable is the black cord that connects the negative battery lead to the frame or chassis of the vehicle. Use a 10-millimeter wrench to loosen the clamp of the grounding cable. The clamp is connected to the negative battery lead post. Once loosened, remove the clamp from the negative lead, and rest it away from the battery until your work is finished.
Disconnecting or connecting components to the Honda without first removing the grounding cable from the battery, will result in a short in the electrical system of the vehicle. - The Honda stereo sits in the dashboard surrounded by a dash trim panel. To access the stereo you must first remove the panel. The panel contains the stereo, the clock, the climate control knobs and the vents.
There are three screws that need to be removed before you can pull the trim panel away from the dash. Two of the screws are on the bottom edge of the panel. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the bottom screws. The last screw is located behind the clock in the center of the dash trim panel.
Use a flat tool (flat-head screwdriver or trim panel removal tool) to pry the clock assembly free from the dash panel. Once relieved, pull the clock away from the dash by hand. There will be a plastic wire grouping binder connecting the clock to the Honda electrical system. Pull the plastic binder from the back of the clock and set the clock aside. Behind where the clock was positioned is a screw. Remove the screw with a Phillips-head screwdriver.
Pull the trim panel from the dash. With all of the screws removed, the panel can be pulled from the dash by hand. Grab the panel at the bottom edge and pull away from the dash. Work your hands around the perimeter of the panel until it is completely free from the dash. Pull the wiring to the climate control knobs away from the back of the trim panel. - The stereo is mounted into the stereo mounting bracket by four screws near the corners of the radio. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove each of the screws. Pull the stereo away from the dash, with even force left and right. The stereo will slide from the bracket until you can see the wiring connected to the back of the deck.
The wiring will include two single cables for the antenna and power supply, respectively. The wire groups connected to the radio are for the speakers and an amplifier (if included in the system). Pull the antenna and power supply cables from the back of the deck. Grab the speaker wires and patch cables to the amplifier by the plastic wiring binders, not the wires themselves. Pulling at the wires can cause the individual wires to separate from the group.
After removing all of the connections to the Honda, the stereo is free to be replaced, discarded or augmented with another component.
