How to Replace the Battery in a Buick
- 1). Lift the hood and locate the battery. On older Buicks, the battery is generally at the front driver's side of the vehicle. Most modern Buicks have the battery on the front passenger's side of the vehicle.
- 2). Remove the retaining bolts that secure the battery's hold-down clamp to the top of the battery with an adjustable wrench.
- 3). Lift the hold-down clamp off the battery.
- 4). Remove the battery cables from the battery. Note that two cables are attached to either the front or the side of the battery, depending on the battery's design. The "-" stamped onto the battery next to one of the cables indicates that this is the negative battery cable. The remaining cable is the positive one. Loosen the bolt that secures the negative battery cable to the battery with an adjustable wrench then lift the cable off the battery. Remove the positive battery cable in the same manner.
- 5). Lift the battery out of the engine compartment. Take care not to tilt the battery, particularly if it is very old as extremely dangerous battery acid may leak out of the top of the battery.
- 6). Lower the new battery onto its tray in the engine compartment.
- 7). Position the positive battery cable either onto or against the positive battery terminal, depending on the battery's design.
- 8). Tighten the positive battery cable's retaining nut with the adjustable wrench until the cable is secure.
- 9). Position the negative battery cable either onto or against the negative battery terminal, depending on the battery's design.
