While it’s not difficult to keep your swimming pool walls clean, it’s important to consistently scrub them. Dedicate time each week to clean your entire pool, including the walls. Visit your local pool retailer to stock up on the necessary tools and cleaners, which will make cleaning your pool quicker and easier. - Purchase a wall and floor brush with nylon bristles. This can be used to clean the walls of a vinyl, fiberglass, or painted pool. If your pool walls are concrete or plaster, you’ll also need an algae brush with stainless steel bristles. If your pool has tile walls, you’ll need a hand-held tile brush to remove calcium and additional deposits. A pumice stone will remove stubborn dirt from tile as well.
- Pool owners should brush the pool walls weekly, at a minimum, which will eliminate calcium scale, algae buildup, and other types of debris. If you have a plaster-lined, concrete pool, you’ll need to use a stiff brush. If your pool is fiberglass or vinyl, you’ll need a softer brush. If you have a tiled pool, don’t use any tools that are abrasive or stiff that will scratch the tiles and destroy the grout. Use a nonabrasive chlorine-based liquid along with either a tile brush or sponge to remove water-line tile scum. Extremely dirty spots that are difficult to clean can be removed using a pumice stone or nylon scouring pad. It’s best to use cleaning products that are recommended by your pool manufacturer.
- To keep debris and dirt from sticking to the walls, it’s important to regularly clean your pool water and floor. Purchase a leaf skimmer to remove large debris. Use a hand skimmer to clean debris before it settles onto the bottom of the pool and sticks to the walls. Use a vacuum to remove dirt from the bottom of your pool. Consistently clean out the baskets to make the pool’s circulation and filtering system more effective. Baskets should be cleaned at least once per week. In-ground pools may have the strainer basket set into the pool deck, while aboveground pools will have the strainer baskets attached to the side of the pool. Vacuum your pool weekly to lessen the use of sanitizing products. You may need to clean the filter after vacuuming.
