- 1). Plant grass, or other cover vegetation, along the shoreline. Select species appropriate for the climate in your area.
- 2). Fence the area to prevent large livestock from grazing along the shoreline. Cattle or horses eating the grass will slow the growth of the plants, and their hooves can tear up the sod, thus allowing more erosion.
- 3). Riprap the waterline. Use rocks up to 2 feet in diameter. Place the rocks side by side covering the shoreline from approximately 1 foot above the high-water mark to about 1 foot below the normal water line. The rocks above the highest possible water level prevent damage from wave action during high-water events, while the rocks below the normal water level will protect the shoreline during dry seasons when water levels are lower.
