How to Start a Bonsai Plant

    • 1). Dig up a young sapling (with its roots) from the wild. These are typically found in the soil near the parent tree. An alternative would be to purchase one from a nursery.

    • 2). Wrap the root ball in damp, uncut sphagnum moss.

    • 3). Fit a screen on the bottom of the training pot to prevent the soil from exiting the holes when watering.

    • 4). Fill the pot with coarse, fast draining soil. Bonsai nurseries will be able to help you make the correct choices.

    • 5). Plant your bonsai tree in the pot of soil and water thoroughly. Keep the soil moist but not soggy.

    • 6). Prune the top of the plant to match the reduced root structure, if necessary. Do not begin training your plant until it has adjusted to its confinement. This training pot will be your plant's home for about a year, sometimes longer. The plant will then be moved to its new home, the shallower bonsai pot.
