    Mean Salary

    • The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicates that the 2010 mean salary for a web developer is $79,370 per year. In this same year the BLS reports that web developers whose salaries fall in the lowest 10 percent of the wage range for this profession earn a median salary of $43,190 per year. In turn, web developers whose earnings fall in the highest 10 percent of the wage range earn a median income of more than $119,940 per year.

    Salary by Industry

    • The BLS reports that web developer positions are largely concentrated in the Computer Systems Design, Wired Telecommunications, Data Processing and Hosting, Other Information Services and Satellite Telecommunications industries. According to the BLS, the highest salaries are paid to web developers in the Architectural and Structural Metals Manufacturing, Rail Transportation, Semiconductor and Electronic Component Manufacturing, Computer and Peripheral Equipment Manufacturing and Other Investment Pools and Funds industries. The Architectural and Structural Metals Manufacturing industry pays $112,670 to web developers, the highest annual mean salary paid by any of these five industrial groups. By contrast, web developers working in the Other Investment Pools and Funds industry are paid $95,390, the lowest annual mean wage paid by any of the five industries in the BLS "Top paying industries in this occupation" group. In turn, the Rail Transportation industry pays an annual mean wage of $105,060 whereas the Semiconductor and Electronic Component Manufacturing industry and the Computer and Peripheral Equipment Manufacturing industries pay $97,640 and $96,820 respectively.

    Salary by Location

    • The highest concentration of web developers in the U.S. can be found in Virginia, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Washington and Minnesota, according to the BLS. The highest mean salary paid for web development in any of these five states is paid to web developers in Virginia, who earn an average of $86,760 annually. Of the salaries paid to web developers in these five states, Minnesota pays the lowest mean wage, which is $81,300 annually. Web developers earning the highest wages can be found in New Jersey ($89,830), followed by Maryland ($89,450), California ($88,860), Virginia ($86,760) and Massachusetts ($86,480).

    Outlook

    • The BLS states that a strong demand will continue to exist for web developers in order to accommodate a growing demand for data transfer over the Internet, an increasing number of Internet users and an expanding variety of services provided over the Internet.
