Stop any programs that require the use of your Internet connection. Instant Messaging programs and auto-updating anti-virus programs take up bandwidth that affect the accuracy of the speed test.

Open your computer's web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Firefox. Enter the Web address of the Internet speed test you want to use. See the Resources section for recommendations.

Click the "Begin Test" or similarly titled button on the homepage. Some speed tests will require you to first select a server closest to your location from the list of servers presented. Choosing the closest server will result in more accurate results.

Wait for the test to conclude. Your download and upload speeds will be presented on screen. Some speed tests may also offer additional information about how to optimize your connection and what contributes to a slower or faster connection.
