In the back of your computer you will see the thumb screws. Take a screwdriver and unscrew any thumb screw from the back of the computer. Your HP desktop can have screws either on the left or right side of the computer depending on which model you are using. Take off the side panels of the computer.
Now you need to remove the front panel of the computer. Computer repair experts suggest referring to the manual book with the system to look for any particular instructions. Generally you will need to push some tabs to remove the front panel. Now take off the front panel completely from the computer and set it aside.
Computer repair experts now suggest taking a look at inside the computer to find out how many bays and expansion slots it has. In most cases it has the components like Advanced Graphics Port or AGP, PCI or Peripheral Component Interconnect etc. AGP is used for graphics card only while PCI is used for different upgrade cards. A newer version of HP Pavilion desktop computers can have the advanced PCI-Express port. You can neither put a PCI-Express card in PCI slot nor can you put a PCI upgrade card in PCI-Express slot.
Now if you want to remove or upgrade any drives unscrew and remove them from the drive cage. It is always better in a HP Pavilion desktop computer that you try to remove old drives through the front side. But in some cases, may be you will be needed to remove the old drives from the back side of the computer.
It is always advised that before buying any CD-ROM or DVD-ROM you should always check the system requirements and system specifications for computer upgrades. HP Pavilion desktops may need the most advanced upgrade cards and hard drives. Sometimes upgrading CD-ROM or DVD-ROM in HP can pose problems because of the drive opening mechanism of the front panel. Make sure you have lined up the buttons of the drives with the mechanism correctly. You should always try to buy the CD or DVD drive directly from HP or from another HP computer.
You can upgrade the RAM of your HP desktop as it was s\recommended for your model in the HP manual. Ensure to put the exact number of pins and the exact type of RAM. Some HP desktop requires installing the RAM in a specific slot or slots. You are required to ensure it accordingly.
