    • 1). Choose an area for the bamboo in a partial shade. While pygmy bamboo plants can tolerate full sun, they grow best in partial shade.

    • 2). Purchase potting soil that is rich in organic matter and has a pH of about 6.5.

    • 3). Create a soil mixture that is two parts potting soil and one part sand. Plant in well-drained soil. Add sand to soil to increase its permeability.

    • 4). Replant indoor pygmy bamboos using the sand and soil mixture. For outdoor bamboo plants, gently knead the new soil into the current soil.

    • 5). Shake the bamboo canes gently once or twice per season to dislodge dead leaves from the shafts. Allow the leaves to settle on the ground or press them into the soil of indoor pygmy plants; they will contribute to the health of the plants as mulch.

    • 6). Water the pygmy bamboo once a week, or however often is needed to keep the soil moist.
