How to Draw, Paint & Create a Halo Glow

    • 1). Draw the halo first with a pencil. Draw two rings that run parallel to give the halo a three-dimensional effect. Draw the first ring at a slight angle as it would appear if it were over an angel's head. Draw a second ring around this one. The distance of the second ring from the first depends upon how thick you want the halo to be.

    • 2). Lightly shade the space inside the two rings (circles). The goal is not to fill this space in, but to give it some shaded lines that will help create a slightly textured appearance once you begin painting. Add some shading around the outside ring of the halo as well. This will help give the impression of emanating light. Use your eraser or finger to smudge this shading to create a fuzzy effect.

    • 3). Paint the halo with yellow oil or acrylic paint. The paint will pick up some of the pencil as you apply it, taking some of the starkness away from the bright yellow paint. This will give you a darker yellow, almost dim gold effect. Add a darker yellow paint or a small amount of black if the color is too bright.

    • 4). Apply white paint around the outer circumference of the halo directly over the pencil shading. Paint light yellow over the white, lighter than the yellow used on the halo. This will give the impression of a soft glow emanating from around the halo.
