How to Finish Cedar Wood
- 1). Rinse exterior cedar using a pressure washer. Allow 24 hours of dry time.
- 2). Sand smooth cedar wood surfaces with 220-grit sandpaper. Sand with the cedar grain or splintering will result. Wipe smooth cedar with a tack cloth. Do not sand rough cedar surfaces, such as exterior cedar siding or shakes.
- 3). Protect areas adjacent to the cedar wood by covering them with drop cloths, painter's masking paper and tape.
- 4). Coat the clean cedar wood with oil-based stain, using a 3- to 4-inch paintbrush. Brush with the flow of the cedar grain. Use shop rags to wipe wet stain from smooth cedar wood surfaces, such as furniture. Do not wipe stain from rough cedar surfaces. Allow four hours of dry time.
- 5). Wash stain from the paintbrush bristles using mineral spirits.
- 6). Coat smooth cedar wood surfaces with varnish using the clean brush. Brush along with the flow of the cedar grain. Allow four hours of dry time. Do not varnish rough cedar siding or shakes.
