How to Paint Comics on Canvas
- 1). Place the canvas on an angled work surface such as an easel. Shine a strong light on the canvas so you can clearly see the minute details of your comic sketch.
- 2). Gather a thick brush, fine brush, glass of water and paint palette around your workstation. The thick brush will fill in large areas while the thin brush creates finer details. Wash your brushes between each color change in the glass of water.
- 3). Mix the color you will start with on a color palette. Apply the colors one at a time so your paint does not dry before you have the chance to use it.
- 4). Dip the tip of your paintbrush into the paint. Do not use more paint on the brush than you need at one time or the paint will appear lumpy on the canvas and dry that way.
- 5). Color in the background of the image first. Fill the part of the image furthest back first and then color in closer objects. For example, if your background is a blue sky and a field, color the sky first and then paint the field once the sky dries.
- 6). Outline the objects and horizons in the comic background with black paint. Use a stiff headed fine brush to add bold, consistent lines instead of wispy paint lines created by a soft brush head.
- 7). Color in the skin on your comic book characters first. Allow the skin tone to dry and then add hair color and clothing color.
- 8). Add details like facial features and clothing designs once the paint dries for the hair and clothing. Use the fine brush for this delicate detailing.
- 9). Outline the characters in black paint once they dry completely. Use the same stiff headed brush you used for the background image to create consistent. If you want to bring focus to your characters instead of the background, make their outlines bolder than the outlines in the background image.

Wash your brushes fully after use or the paint will ruin them. Leave your canvas on the easel to dry.
