How Do I Backup My iPod Songs?

    Creating a CD/DVD Backup

    • When deciding what kind of backup to make, there are a couple of things to take into account: the kind of burner your computer has and the size of your music collection.

If your computer only has a CD burner, recordable CDs are your only option. If your computer burns both CDs and DVDs, you can choose which one better serves your needs. Recordable CDs are less expensive than recordable DVDs, but they have a capacity of 700MB of storage compared to 4.7GB on a recordable DVD. If you are backing up a large library, a recordable DVD might be the best option.

Start the backup process by opening iTunes and clicking "File" on the main menu at the top of the screen. Scroll down to the "Library" option, then click "Back up to Disc" in the submenu.

You will be given the option of backing up your entire library or only the music you've purchased through the iTunes store. To back up your entire library, click on the box to the left of the "Back up entire iTunes library and playlists" option. To back up only your iTunes purchases, click on the box to the left of the "Back up only iTunes Store purchases" option.

iTunes also will give you the option of backing up your entire library or just the songs you've added since you did your last backup. If you want to back up the entire library, leave the box to the left empty. If you only want to back up the songs you've added since your last backup, click on the box to the left of that option.

Once you've made your selections, iTunes will eject the tray for your CD/DVD burner and prompt you to insert a blank disc. When it does this, insert a blank CD or DVD into the tray and push it back into your computer. Once the disc is in the computer, iTunes will automatically begin burning the backup disc.

Depending on the size of your library, it might take several discs to complete the backup. If it does require multiple discs, iTunes will burn each disc up to its capacity and then prompt you to insert another disc.

Once these discs are complete, you will be able to restore your iTunes library if anything happens to your computer or iPod.
