Outdoor living spaces are all the rage these days as homeowners everywhere spend more time relaxing and hosting guests alfresco.
More and more outdoor living spaces are becoming multifunctional environments that include cooking and kitchen facilities, an entertainment center, and comfortable seating options.
To complement the surrounding, homeowners are frequently installing televisions to supplement their outdoor living space.
Installing an indoor TV in your outdoor living space can be hazardous, and poses numerous safety issues.
For example, the moisture or dust/dirt that can get into the infrastructure of an indoor television can cause it to malfunction.
Insects, some of which gravitate towards light sources, can enter through exterior holes on indoor TVs, causing the TVs to short circuit.
In these situations the interior circuit boards can fail beyond repair, or even worse, electrocute you or your loved ones.
Large temperature changes can also cause harm to indoor TVs.
Temperature differentials can be associated with moisture laden air, which can enter indoor TVs.
Enough exposure will lead to corrosion of the circuit boards.
Because of these dangers installing an indoor TV for outdoor use typically shortens the lifespan of the TV, typically to less than one year.
It is no surprise, then, that installing an indoor TV outside usually invalidates the manufacturer's warranty.
Consumers wishing to install a TV outdoors should consider a weatherproof TV, also known as a weatherized TV or outdoor TV.
These TVs are relatively new to the consumer electronics industry.
Nonetheless, these specialized TVs do a terrific job of protecting the internal circuitry and external display from the outdoor elements.
The two primary manufacturers of waterproof or weatherized televisions are Sunbrite and MirageVision, and each delivers a high-quality product.
Weatherproof TVs are made with a specialized outer materials -- usually a powder-coated aluminum or high quality resin -- which allows them to easily ventilate so that they don't overheat and it prevents them from rusting as a result of direct exposure to rain or any other moisture.
The bottom line is that the elements that exist in an outdoor setting will not damage a permanently installed television.
Additionally, the internal electronic components of a weatherized TV is completely sealed off so that they are not brought into contact with the elements that could so easily damage an indoor television.
In fact, some weatherized TVs have internal heating and cooling units designed to protect the TV from extreme temperatures.
