How to Water Plants With Ice

    • 1). Assess a plant to determine if it needs water. Insert your finger into the soil near the plant. If the soil feels dry 1 inch beneath the surface of the soil, provide water for the plant.

    • 2). Collect four ice cubes for a small plant or a plant in a small container. Collect six ice cubes for a medium-size plant or a plant in a medium container. Collect up to eight ice cubes for a large plant in a large container.

    • 3). Place the ice cubes onto the soil around the plant, keeping them 2 to 3 inches away from the plant stem. Surround the plant with ice cubes evenly.

    • 4). Monitor the melting process for drainage out the bottom of the container. It is unlikely the water will run through because it will usually absorb completely before reaching the bottom drainage holes. If water does drain out the bottom, you may need to prepare to catch it, depending upon the location of the plant.

    • 5). Repeat the watering process any time the soil feels dry around a plant.
