    • 1). Follow the gas line under the gas tank to the end clamped to the side of the carburetor. Unscrew the clamp with a flathead screwdriver. Pull the gas line off, and point it into the bucket to collect the old gas.

    • 2). Spray carburetor cleaner spray into the side of the carburetor for six to eight seconds. Push the gas line back onto the side of the carburetor, and tighten the clamp back down.

    • 3). Unscrew the bolt from the base of the carburetor with the flathead screwdriver. Pull the fuel bowl off, and dump it in the old gas bucket. Spray carburetor cleaner in the fuel bowl and the area above the bowl. Screw the bowl back on tightly. Cleaning the carburetor eliminates any fuel problems the Snapper engine may have had.

    • 4). Pull the cap off of the spark plug; unscrew the spark plug with the proper size socket. Push the spark plug back into the spark plug cap. Hold the rubber spark plug cap and touch the end of the spark plug against the steel area on the front of the engine block. Ask a friend to pull the rope or turn the ignition key. Watch the tip of the spark plug for a blue spark. If you see the spark, the spark plug is fine; if there isn't a spark, you must replace the spark plug.

    • 5). Screw in a new spark plug with your fingers. Put the proper size socket on the torque wrench, and tighten the spark plug the rest of the way until the torque wrench reads 15 ft-lbs. on the foot pounds meter located on the torque wrench head. Push the spark plug cap back onto the spark plug.

    • 6). Unscrew the air filter cover with the flathead screwdriver. Pull out the old air filter. Inspect it for debris or bent paper fins; if either are present, they are inhibiting airflow. Replace it with a new air filter.

    • 7). Put a new air filter in place. Tighten the air filter cover back on.
