How to Design Your Own Grave Marker

    • 1). Pick what material your gravestone will be made out of. Most are made out of granite, a long-lasting and lovely stone that comes in a variety of colors. Bronze is another popular, elegant and enduring material for gravestones. Depending on the stone, you may need to pick a style of edging that you prefer. You will also need to decide what thickness you want, a choice often dictated by your cemetery's rules governing markers.

    • 2). Next, decide on any embellishments or images, such as cherubs, a Star of David, praying hands, or other symbol or image you'd like to put on your grave marker. If you need help coming up with something, think about symbols that represent the passions or personality of the person being remembered. An emblem for a headstone should be an image that is representative of what the deceased loved about life or felt was most important. It might be something as simple as a bowling pin. Some images represent specific concepts. For example, a bird motif is thought to symbolize resurrection, while a lamb is representative of innocence.

    • 3). Start with the name, date of birth and date of death. The rest of the wording--the epitaph--is an important part of the grave marker, monument or memorial. It is not unusual for a gravestone to feature a term of endearment, such as "Loving Mother" or "Beloved Sister." Perhaps there's a particularly appropriate quote or expression, a poem or witticism that might bring a smile to anyone who visits the grave. Many people use a favorite excerpt from the Bible or other religious work on their tombstones. Most gravestone makers will work with you and offer advice, if you need it.

    • 4). Once you are happy with your design, submit it to the gravestone-maker company. You will be sent a final proof to check, allowing for changes before production starts.
