Color swatches are always displayed in a store when household paint is being sold. The various colors of the paints are printed on small, usually bookmark-sized, papers so that potential customers can take them home and choose colors for their house before purchasing the paint. Graphic designers often show clients various digital color samples when creating design projects. Digital color swatches have corresponding numbers to detail how the color is created in order to ensure consistency across graphic design materials when printed or displayed.
It is common for a graphic designer to show color swatches for font choices and logos. A color wheel shows color swatches arranged in a circle, starting with the three primary colors, red, yellow and blue. The three secondary colors -- orange, green and purple -- occur when you mix the adjacent primary colors on the wheel together. Color wheels show the colors that are created from mixing the next set of adjacent colors on the circle. They also sometimes show the lights and darks of colors by adding black or white paint.
The swatches visually illustrate color combinations. Color palettes are sets of color swatches grouped together to create a specific look. An interior designer will often be hired to paint a room, paint an accent wall a different color, then add another color for the trim. The three or more colors are photographed in the finished, decorated room.The photo is displayed alongside the grouped color swatches, implying that they belong together. This marketing tool allows customers to better pair different colors and match paint colors to existing decor hues.
