How to Plant Lily of the Valley Berries
- 1). Watch for green berries 1/8 inch in diameter to form along the flower stalks of lily of the valley in summer. They will ripen and turn dark by fall. Collect them.
- 2). Break open the berries over a damp paper towel by rubbing the berries between your fingers. Several tiny black seeds will come out.
- 3). Wrap up the seeds in the wet paper towel, put it in a resealable plastic bag and store in your refrigerator for six to eight weeks. This process, called cold stratification, mimics winter conditions outdoors, and helps the seeds germinate.
- 4). Fill a seed tray with moist, sterile potting mix and scatter the seeds from the paper towel on top. Keep the tray uniformly moist, in a warm, sunny spot until seeds germinate. This can take up to two months.
- 5). Thin seedlings to 4 to 6 inches apart when they are an inch tall. Transplant seedlings to individual pots in summer, and transplant into moist, rich, shaded soil in the landscape in fall. Cover with leaf litter for the winter, and lift it away in spring.
