How to Draw a Horse's Eye Step-by-Step

    • 1). Draw a circle.

    • 2). Draw a triangle over the circle.

    • 3). Sketch in the eyelid and eyelashes lightly.

    • 4). Draw and shade in the curves and wrinkles around the eye. This is a very important step for adding personality and character to the horse. Study the picture you are drawing from to pick up on those fine lines and wrinkles around the eye. These lines and curves are what will add expression to your drawing. Use the blending stump to make the shading gradual.

    • 5). Lightly sketch in where the pupil will go.

    • 6). Shade around the edge of the circle to define the roundness of the shape. Use the blending stump to go from black around the edge to light gray up to the pupil.

    • 7). Shade in the pupil, but do not make rigidly defined lines. The pupil is not an exact circle, so to make it look realistic, keep it to more of a rectangular circle with no hard, defined lines.

    • 8). Lighten the shading of the pupil as it goes out to the edge of the iris. Use the eraser and blending stump to keep lightening the area as it comes out from the darkness of the pupil.

    • 9). Add light reflection marks by erasing small amounts of the pencil shading. The reflection marks should follow the contour of the eye. Soften the reflection by smudging lightly with your finger or blending stick.

Darken any areas such as the eyelid that you sketched in, and finish any small details.
