    Types of Sprayers

    • The four main types of sprayers include cup, air, airless and HVLP systems. The best type for each job largely depends on the size of the project and the discretion of the painter.

    Cup Sprayer

    • This type sucks paint from a cup into a gun and is dispensed and controlled through pressing on the trigger. It is best for small areas like shelving units.

    Air & Airless Sprayers

    • Air sprayers are larger versions of cup sprayers. Airless models force air through a tiny nozzle and provide more control than air-powered versions. Both are used for large interior projects.

    HVLP Models

    • HVLP (high-volume, low-pressure) paint sprayers use two methods to apply paint. A high-volume compressor forces the paint into a receptacle and the low-pressure mechanism dispenses it in a fine, slow mist. This type is used to paint large ceilings and walls.

    General Guidelines

    • All paint sprayers are prone to clogging, so thinning paint may be necessary before spraying. Masking trim and fixtures is recommended to protect them from the paint mist residue.
