    • 1). Make sure you have the following information at hand: the artist's name, title of the work, date of creation, city and country of origin, dimensions of the work and the name of the museum or repository in which the original work is shown (or the owner of the work). If you acquired the art photo from a book, find out the author, title, publisher, date and figure number. Take note of the website URL address and and access date if you acquired the photo via the Internet.

    • 2). Follow the exact form shown in the example below, including proper punctuation, when citing the art photo in MLA style. The work title (shown in brackets) must be underlined.

Example: Sweetrocket, Riva. [Sweet Tooth]. 2008. Flashpoint Academy, Chicago.

    • 3). Write out the citation correctly if you found the work via a website. Follow this exact format, including the date you accessed the website and the website's precise URL:

Example: Sweetrocket, Riva. [Sweet Tooth]. 2008. Flashpoint Academy, Chicago. Accessed 27 May 2011. <http://www.sweetrocket.com/sweettooth.html>

    • 4). Write out the proper citation if you found the work in a book. Note that words in brackets should be underlined. The last number in the example is the page number. Follow this format:

Example: Sweetrocket, Riva. [Sweet Tooth]. 2008. Flashpoint Academy, Chicago. [Plus Gallery Contemporary Art]. By Richard Hoffman. New York: Bad Lands Press, 2009. 134

    • 5). Cite the art photo within your research paper should you plan on displaying the photo in the essay. Proceed the citation with the figure number, the number being the order in which the work is displayed in your paper. Note that in this example, Denver, Colorado is the city in which the art was originally created. Follow the format in the example:

Example: Fig. 1. Sweetrocket, Riva. [Sweet Tooth]. Flashpoint Academy, Chicago. Illus. in Richard Hoffman, [Plus Gallery Contemporary Art] (Denver, Colorado: Flashpoint Academy, Chicago 2008) 134.
