How to Draw Small Flowers
- 1). Lightly sketch the basic outlines of the small flowers, as seen in the flower photograph, using the non-photo blue pencil. Don't worry about details; the idea is to get the basic shape down, including petals, stems and leaves.
- 2). Draw lightly over the non-photo blue lines with an HB, 2B or 3B charcoal pencil. Keep the outlines of the petals lighter to give them a more delicate look. Add details like pollen, petal and leaf texture.
- 3). Fill in the stems and leaves of the flowers with the charcoal pencil, using the photograph as a reference for shading. For example, if the light source in the photograph is to the left, the stem and leaves will be lighter on the left side.
- 4). Rub a blending stump in a circular motion along the smoother areas of the flowers, such as the petals and stem. This will blend the charcoal together to create a smoother, smudgy appearance.
- 5). Draw smaller details like petal creases, leaf veins and stamens with a 2B or 3B graphite pencil, which is smoother and creates a sharper line. Use the graphite pencil to create sharper edges on leaves if desired.
