    History

    • Dolby Laboratories designed the first surround sound processing method in 1976 for commercial use, but it did not include a center channel. The original consumer sound systems were not developed until 1982. Dolby first manufactured the center channel speakers in 1987 with the introduction of Dolby Pro Logic systems. It was during the 1980s that home theater systems became affordable for consumers and center speakers became a necessary part of them. Dolby introduced Dolby Digital during the 1990s that used digital audio multi-channel coding technology. The Pro Logic II (2000) and Pro Logic IIx (2002) are improved versions of the original.

    Significance

    • Prior to the center channel speakers' introduction, individual sounds were not separated from each other. Audio could be heard from speakers placed around the room, but it was basically the same sound. The center channel speaker changed this, since it is utilized specifically for the dialog or vocals of a recording. The major sounds were divided between the front right and left channels and the rear channel produces the lower sound effects. The way people listened to audio produced from their sound systems was drastically changed.

    Function

    • The method used in Dolby Surround consists of four channels of audio encoded into a two-channel (stereo) signal. The four channels include a front right, front left, rear surround and center. A chip is used to decode the four channels and the signal is transmitted to the correct speaker. When the speakers are placed at specific locations, the listener gets the "feeling" of being in the middle of the action. Any one who desires to create a home theater sound system uses a center speaker. It is often found in home entertainment systems along with the other required speakers.

    Identification

    • A center channel speaker is often included in home theater "all-in-one" kits that consist of all of the required components to install a home theater system. It can also be purchased separately. A center channel speaker is usually longer in width than it is in height. It is most often shaped like a rectangle, but is available in a variety of styles. The size of a center channel speaker can range from a few inches to more than two feet in length.

    Considerations

    • In order to get surround sound from your home theater arrangement, each speaker must be precisely located. The center channel speaker should be placed centered above or below the television set. It should be set as close to ear-height of the listener as possible. All other speakers included will have to be installed correctly to complete the surround sound setup.
