How to Direct-Sow Flower Seeds

    • 1). Rake the garden soil with a garden rake. Chop at the soil to break up any large chunks. A smooth, loose soil makes it easier for flowers to grow.

    • 2). Place a pencil eraser into your soil and use it to draw a line. This line serves as a guide for where you will plant your flower seeds. Read the back of the flower seed packet so you know at what depth the seeds need to be planted. Use your eraser to create a line at the correct depth for each type of seed.

    • 3). Place a few flower seeds in the soil, every 3 inches. Work your way down the row, planting seeds every few inches, until you reach the end.

    • 4). Cover your flower seeds with soil and pat the soil down with your hands.

    • 5). Write the name of the flower seeds you planted on a craft stick, using a permanent marker. Place the craft stick at the end of each different row or section. This will help you tell flower seedlings apart.

    • 6). Fill your watering can and water your newly sown seeds. Water every three days unless it rains. Flower seeds need regular watering for root growth.

    • 7). Thin your flower seedlings after four weeks. Pulling out the extras will create space so your flowers can grow into full, healthy plants.
