How to Determine Actual Print Cost for Laser Printers
- 1). Consult the website of the printer manufacturer for a full list of printer consumables you will need to purchase. These consumables include the color toner cartridges, the fuser, the transfer roller and the maintenance kit.
- 2). Use a printer supply or office supply catalog to price each of those consumables. Write the price of each consumable using a piece of paper or a spreadsheet. Add up the total cost of all the consumables.
- 3). Use the estimated page capacity for each consumable listed in the catalog, but keep in mind that it is only an estimate. For instance, a toner cartridge may be rated for 50,000 copies, but if you print a lot of full color pages you may get less than 40,000 copies before the cartridge is exhausted.
- 4). Keep track of your own consumable usage by printing a self-test page each time you change a toner cartridge or add another consumable. Keep these sheets in a safe place and use them to determine how many sheets you are getting for each toner cartridge.
- 5). Go back to your spreadsheet and write the actual number of sheets you got out of the toner cartridge you just installed. Continue to do the same thing with each consumable, and then divide the number of sheets by the total cost of your consumables.
