Washing machines in general come with an average lifespan of about nine years. In these nine years the owners can expect proper functioning of the appliance with minimum or no repair and replacement work. However, the fact to consider here is that while there are some washers that can carry on for over the mentioned number of years with minimum defects and deterioration, there are those that cannot live past even the initial years of usage without calling for severe repair and replacements of components. There are a number of reasons that can affect the performance of washers in general, some of which can be the direct contribution of the owners and some of which are beyond their control.

The quality of the purchased appliance is affects the performance of the same and this is also something that is way beyond the control of the owners. At the same time, ‘quality' as a factor plays a major role in determining the lifespan of the same. Take for instance, a top quality washer like those from Whirlpool, GE, Maytag, Kenmore are of supreme quality, and their components are also very sturdy and durable. Thus, these appliances can last for longer than expected. On the other hand, washers belonging to low end cheap brands can give up within the first two years of purchase because their parts are not strong enough to deal with everyday load.

However, maintenance of washer parts is a crucial factor that contributes to enhancing the lifespan of the appliance and this is well within the control of owners of the same. For many owners, maintenance of washers is restricted to dusting the exterior of the appliances and nothing more. Many also believe that washers are self cleaning so, no additional maintenance would be required. At the same time, not many consumers would wish to turn such a heavy appliance upside down to check for damages every other day. The point to note here is that maintenance of appliance parts does not necessarily mean disassembling and reassembling the same. Ensuring proper usage and using a quality cleaning agent to run regular clean cycles would be more than enough.

Washer parts in general respond well to regular cleaning, and this is perhaps the best form of maintenance that the owners can ensure. All that the owners have to do in this respect is to locate a quality cleaning agent, pour it into the washer and run the clean cycle. The rest will be taken care of. This aspect of maintenance has to be done at least once every month or, as required depending upon the level of usage. The washers of poor quality require more maintenance because the parts of such appliances are prone to develop easy damages and cannot undergo heavy wear and tear. Appliance parts usually send out signs of damage and deterioration through a variety of malfunctioning, and so do the components of washers. Owners must know how to read into these signs and attend to the damages that may have occurred in the appliance before they become more severe.
