How to Use a Computer to Organize Genealogy Files & Records
- 1). Investigate the many software options and choose one that meets your needs. Check the program's system requirements to assure they match your computer's operating system. Most programs support importing and exporting a database to the universal GEDCOM format for sharing the database between programs.
- 2). Install the software according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- 3). Gather your records and prepare for data entry. Scan photographs or historic documents and place them in family-named folders for easier access.
- 4). Type the information into the database. Although you can begin with any individual, most programs suggest entering yourself first and building the database from there.
- 5). Enter all available information, photographs and documents for one individual at a time, along with sources.
