Volunteer Firefighter Requirements
- Volunteer firefighters are trained to respond to emergencies such as fires, car accidents and rescues. Depending on the location of the fire house, volunteers may cover a large, urban area or a small, rural area. Not all volunteer firefighters have specialized jobs, but the fire chief and truck drivers have very important roles in directing and driving other firefighters to the scene.
- Those interested in volunteer firefighting are trained for several weeks in a variety of procedures and handling before they can take part in a real emergency. Some fire companies will require volunteers to attend rescue and emergency related courses at a community college or technical school before becoming an established volunteer.
- If you don't live local to the fire house you'd like to volunteer at, you may not be able to volunteer there. This is because you should be local to the fire house so that you can attend calls and emergencies.
- Volunteer firefighters must be in good shape to successfully perform the tasks of their job. They must also be alert and have good coordination, since they should be able to take control of an emergency situation and interact professionally with victims, police officers, fellow firefighters, the press and passerbys.
- Above anything else, volunteer firefighters should be dedicated to the job. If they lack seriousness and commitment, they may risk lives of others or even their own.
