Picture Tagging Exploited By Spammy Online Marketing Desperates
Especially when it comes to online social networking sites like Facebook and twitter but for today, I will focus on annoying push-marketing tactics employed.
Facebook, when they first introduced the 'picture tagging' feature, meant to make it easy for people whenever they wanted to share pictures with friends.
For instance, if you went to a party and you were the only one with a camera, when you upload the video onto Facebook, you tag your friends (who were in the picture) along with it because you want to share the picture.
At every little turn, you can never undermine unscrupulous marketing people.
You can trust them to come up with ways to exploit a decent feature like that and turn it into an online offense.
Have no inkling as to what the offense is? If you have been consistently and relentlessly tagged by people in pictures where you are in no way associated with, you would know what I mean.
For those who are not actively using Facebook, then here is an example.
Assuming that you own an online business and you have tons of pictures of your products but you only have 15 friends on your friends list.
You need exposure and more friends on your list, what do you do? Simple.
In every one of the picture, tag your friends.
Tag all of them in it.
What would that serve, you ask? As soon as you tag the people in your picture, it appears on their wall and it also informs all of their friends about them being in the picture.
That spells free ride to me.
Tagging a person on a product picture is NOT fine.
A reputable and respectable company or individual knows that.
Unless it is meant as a joke or you know that person personally (and quite well), do not use the picture-tagging method of marketing on Facebook.
Not only will you annoy the person that you are tagging, you are taking on the risk of losing them as your customer (if they were your customer in the first place).
Online social networking is not about push-marketing.
It is almost always about pull-marketing - use it wisely.
